Sea Stories in Stone
George Dillingham (1826-1847) - Woodlawn, Freeport
Lost at Sea
Lines from this stone, in a lonely corner of Woodlawn cemetery:
The sea, the lonely blue sea hath one
He lies where pearls lie deep
He was loved of all yet
None over his low head may weep
Capt. George Dillingham and his crew, entirely from Freeport, set sail from Georgetown, a port in the West Indies, April 1, 1847. Bound for Portland, Maine, the men and their schooner Martha Ann were never seen again. Capt. Randall was 32.
