Mariam (Allen) Johnson (1801-1877) - Old Burying Ground, Harpswell

Her Journey

June 10, 1811, Mariam(Miriam) Allen was born in Harpswell. Her father was a farmer, her uncles and cousins were sea captains.

Christmas eve 1832, She married Charles Johnson, also a farmer in Harpswell.

From 1833-1846 Mariam delivered five children. One son, Stephen, became a sea captain.

March 6, 1877, she died in Harpswell at age 67. Her white bronze monument is topped by a scallop shell, a symbol of going on a journey. Her stone is as unusual as her life was ordinary.
