Reuben Mooers (1813-1877) - Oak Grove, Bath

From Ship Master to Junk Man

TOWN AND COUNTRY: Capt. Reuben Mooers, of this city, died suddenly of heart disease, just as we go to press this morning.

Reuben Mooers was a sea captain from Bath. Among his commands were the brig Nebraska (1859, Bath), the ship Missouri (1854, Phipsburg), and the brig Wanderer, a Portland vessel. He had one son and five daughters.

Census records and city directories show that in his later years he was an "Old Junk and Rag Dealer" on the Commerical Street wharf and employed his brother Daniel.

Capt. Mooers died intestate and among his inventoried goods were

Despite goods and real estate valued at $1100, at the time of his death his net worth was $159.73.
