James Randall was the eighth of the 11 children of Robert Randall (c.1775-1844) a veteran of the War of 1812 and a farmer in Freeport. Two of James' brothers, a brother-in-law, and at least two newphers also followed the sea.
James' brother, Capt. Robert Randall, was lost overboard during a gale from the ship Cairo while enroute from Havana to Mobile in 1840. Brother-in-law Reuben Curtis was lost with all hands also in 1840. Jame's nephew, Jeremiah Randall was lost at sea in 1850 at age 18. Another nephew was Robert's son, Capt. Rufus Soul Randall (1830-1888), who enjoyed a long and successful career.
James also followed the sea and was working as a stevedore when he died in Mobile. His body was brought home to Freeport where it lies with his ancestors in Mast Landing cemetery.
